Distilleria Varnelli Description
Founded in 1868 by Girolamo Varnelli, the Varnelli Distillery is today a joint stock and holding company that is managed by the fourth generation of a business family, made up of four women. The founder, Girolamo Varnelli, lived in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains, now a National Park, where he studied the medicinal plants of the land. This is how he got the idea for many recipes for distillates and bitters, the Amaro Sibilla being one of those that stood out, which was used during those times as an antimalarial and antipyretic drug for its high content of Gentiana Lutea and China Calyssaia. The biggest family invention is due to his son Antonio Varnelli, who interpreted and sophisticated the diffused Marchigiano recipe for anisette. He then created Varnelli - a strong, elegant and inimitable drink with an anise flavor - that soon became the pride of the Varnelli Distillery and brought fame to the family name.
A secret recipe using the native plant, aniseed, an aromatic plant well known and beloved for its fresh taste and its medicinal virtues. Traditional production practices are used. From the grinding of the ingredients with a mortar and pestle to the fueling of the fire with logs, the entire production process is executed by hand as it has been for over a century.
First awarded in 1950 as “the best italian dry anise”, Varnelli is a unique flavor among the Mediterranean aniseed drinks: dry, not sweet, it hooks you at the first taste.
Tasting Notes: The strong, persistent aromas of aniseed develop into a fragrance of wild fennel, dill and cumin, enriched with floral scents. On The Palate: All-enveloping, full-bodied, medium dry, it recalls the same strong, persistent aromas found in the bouquet: aniseed, cucumber and wild fennel. The finish is harmonious, which is a sign of excellent quality, and very pleasant.

Richly herbal and earthy in the piquant and gently spicy aroma; taste profile is lushly earthy and acutely herbaceous, leafy and vegetal; spicy aftertaste is lovely.
