Maker's Mark Description
Aroma: Pleasant, sweet, toasty oak nose with caramel overtones. More intense aroma without an alcohol nose.
Taste: Rich, creamy seared-oak flavors; caramel and vanilla notes linger on the front of the palate, but it is still soft enough to hold on the tongue even at 94 proof.
Finish: A big mouth-watering oaky finish. Long with a little spice, staying forward on the palate without the bitter bite found in older whiskies.
Maker’s Mark 46 has a new look.
Originally released in 2010 under the taste vision of Bill Samuels, Jr., son of the Maker’s Mark founders, Maker’s Mark 46 was the first new major expression to be created at the Distillery since its original bourbon went into production in 1953, and the first offering from the brand’s wood-finishing series. It has been sold in the same packaging since its initial release.
The innovative wood-stave-finishing process that defines 46 starts with fully matured Maker’s Mark at cask strength. Ten seared virgin French oak staves are then inserted into the barrel and left to mature for an additional nine weeks in the Maker’s Mark limestone cellar.
The new bottle adds a label, versus the clear, etched bottle 46 has traditionally been used by Maker’s Mark. The new designed features the words “French Oaked,” versus the previous packaging’s wording “Finished with Oak Staves.”
Also new is a facsimile Samuels signature over the 46 logo, and the words, “Bill’s Recipe.”
Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points
94 - The nose finds supersweet deep caramel candy and almond extract, but don't be fooled. On the tongue, it's punch-in-the-nose dry and biting. Best served on ice, which takes down the burn and lets the pronounced woody flavors come through: lots of oak, strong tea and cigar tobacco.
