Inglenook Description
Intense aromas of dark berries with hints of violets and fine roasted oak fill the nose. The sturdy framework and intensely expressive red and black fruits give great power and length to the finish. Two hours of decanting is recommended before drinking; 2009 is a perfect vintage for collectors.
In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola purchased part of the historic Inglenook property, intent on restoring the estate’s legacy of creating world-class wines equal to those that founder Gustave Niebaum and his grandnephew John Daniel Jr. produced for decades. Rubicon, the estate’s flagship wine since 1978, is produced from the best fruit on the estate and comprised of the historic Gustave Niebaum Cabernet selection, first planted on the property in the 1880s.
Vintage notes:
Light springs rains were followed by warm summer days and no extreme climate variables – ideal conditions that allowed the fruit to ripen steadily and evenly throughout the 2009 vintage. This allowed us to be very selective during the harvest process, choosing fruit that displayed heightened characteristics, richness, and complexity. The Cabernet harvested on our estate in 2009 is well concentrated and displays powerful tannins that will reward cellaring.
Winemaker:
Under the direction of consulting winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt, the hand-selected grapes were placed in small fermenters where they macerated for 21 days for heightened richness. Seventeen months in French oak barrels encouraged the integration of flavors and tannins.
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
A classy effort that is rich and layered, restrained and structured, showing fine tension between the dried currant, cedar, cigar box and anise flavors and the firm, fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2023
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
A big, imposing wine, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is going to need some time to shed its tannin and baby fat. There is plenty of weight and gravitas in the glass. Smoke, tar, chocolate, licorice and dark red raspberries are all woven into the virile, authoritative finish. In 2009 the blend is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.
