Domaine Henri Delagrange Description
The Delagrange coat of arms dates back to 1570, and the family has owned vineyards in the Cotes de Beaune ever since. Didier Delagrange is the sixth generation vintner at the estate to bottle the family’s wines. At the border between the villages of Volnay and Pommard, where a good part of the Domaine's vines are situated, there exists one of the most interesting geological contrasts in all of Burgundy. Here, the slopes of Volnay produce Pinot Noir that is lacy, delicate and fragrant. A few hundred feet away, where the slopes flatten out, the soils of Pommard yield Pinot with great muscle and concentration.
Delagrange owns 14 hectares of vines in the communes of Volnay, Pommard, Aloxe Corton, Meursault and Haute Cote de Beaune. The famous 1er Cru "Clos des Chenes" of Volnay totals 15ha of vines, and Didier boasts one of the best plots located right in the center. The philosophy and practice at Delagrange is that the majority of the work is done in the vineyard. We hear this time and time again. However, the amount of manual labor that Didier performs in his vineyards is remarkable. Leaves are thinned by hand multiple times to remove those that shade the bunches; and canopies are trellised unusually high to counteract the severe lower thinning so that photosynthesis isn't stunted.
In the cellar, Didier employs indigenous yeast and uses new oak only sparingly to craft wines that are very rich with precise aromatics and very pure fruit.
TASTING NOTES: The robe and nuances of this wine are deep red and purplish ruby. On the nose, small black fruits (blackberry, blueberry) are dominant when young. With age, the aromas tend towards truffle, copper and chocolate notes, enlivened by floral scents. On the palate, the balance is perfect – powerful and round. A charming wine.
FOOD PAIRING: Furred or feathered game will do this wine justice: hare à la royale, wild boar stew with grand veneur sauce, or even guinea fowl. It pairs equally well with a fine prime rib or raw milk cheese.
