E. Guigal Description
ESTATE:
The firm of E. Guigal, located in Ampuis, was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal. Since 1961 his son Marcel has led the estate, and his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to quality have brought attention to Côte-Rôtie and other appellations throughout the Rhone that were in danger of being lost, and lifted the Guigal wines to the pinnacle of the wine world. Today, Marcel’s son Philippe serves as Director and Oenologist, continuing the tradition of leadership in the Rhone Valley and uncompromising excellence.
WINE:
Hermitage Ex-Voto represents the fulfillment of a longtime dream of Guigal’s to own his own vineyards on the hill of Hermitage. Through the purchase of the de Vallouit and J. L. Grippat domaines in 2000, Guigal acquired four vineyard parcels on this legendary site. The 2001 vintage was the first release of this estatebottled Hermitage red and white.
VITICULTURE:
The red comes from Bessards (30%), Greffieux (30%), L’Hermite (20%), and Murets (20%), and spends a full 42 months in new casks and is bottled without fining or filtration. These cuvées will be produced only in exceptional vintages. This represents the pinnacle of the appellation, with exceptional concentration and great potential longevity.
VINIFICATION:
The average age of the vines are 40 to 90 years old. The wine had regular pumpovers in thermregulated stainless steel tanks. Aged in oak barrels for 42 months in new oak barrels and alcoholic fermentation was carried out and 4 weeks maceration.
TASTING NOTES:
Eye: Deep dark ruby color with mauve tints. Nose: Black fruits, leather, licorice, coffee flavor and oriental spices. Palate: Powerful attack with richness and an important tannic structure. This wine expression fully the terroir trough its finesse and the strength of its tannins. Overall: Great aging potential, structured and concentrated with a rare intensity of flavor and color.
Wine Advocate: 97 Points
A similar extroverted, sexy style to the '09, just on a slightly smaller scale, the 2007 Hermitage Ex Voto offers sensational black raspberry, creme de cassis, creamy licorice and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors, with the telltale minerality/graphite of the Hermitage Hill coming through with time in the glass. While aged close to four years in 100% new French oak, you'd never know it by tasting it. This full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered and already approachable beauty will have another 30+ years of drinkability.

Wine Spectator: 95 Points
"This has gorgeous espresso and roasted mesquite aromatics, followed by dense but velvety-textured plum sauce, blackberry paste and cassis flavors. The long, suave finish smolders with Lapsang souchong tea and singed iron, showing ample grip for the cellar. Best from 2012 through 2025."

"Opaque ruby. Boysenberry, blueberry and smoky Indian spices on the expansive, heady nose, with a sexy floral quality that gains strength with air. Deep, sappy and palate-staining dark fruit compote flavors show unlikely energy and become spicier and smokier with air. A strikingly expressive, potent and compellingly fragrant wine that finishes with superb clarity and floral-driven persistence. 94-96 Points"
