The 2019 Per'e Palummo La Vigna dei Mille Anni opens with a complex blend of white smoke, crushed rocks and ground ginger. Swirling unlocks further depths of dried black cherry and exotic spice. This assaults the palate with a silken wave of textural wild berry fruits, staining all it touches in primary concentration. Sour citrus and mineral tones add further tension. It finishes incredibly long, leaving the cheeks puckered as fine-grained tannins and a bitter bite of citrus rind lingers impossibly long. As is often the case, La Vigna dei Mille Anni has left me entirely in awe. There is so much complexity and potential here.

Made with fruit from 100-year-old Piedirosso vines, the 2019 Ischia Per'e Palummo La Vigna dei Mille Anni shows a lot of personality and varietal character. There are raw berry notes and wild bramble, with sweet butterscotch and caramel. The wine is aged in large oak casks for 18 months, and with time, sweaty notes or sulfur also appear. This is a 6,500-bottle production from the island of Ischia, which has hot springs and volcanic activity.
