Priest Ranch Description
Priest Ranch believes that all wines must stem from the land itself. Our winemaker and viticulturist, Craig Becker, draws on rich, diverse vineyard sources of the Napa Valley that feature a variety of elevations, exposures, soils and microclimates. With knowledge borne of deep experience, Craig takes a minimalist approach to winemaking, encouraging the highest expression of personality, intensity and distinction in each varietal we produce.
APPELLATION & VINEYARDS The historic Priest Ranch is now part of Somerston Estate, a significant property totaling 1,615 acres with 225 acres of hillside vineyards. What defines and distinguishes the estate are the dramatic elevations of the vineyards, ranging from 800 ft. to 1,600 ft. The wines of Priest Ranch are sourced from multiple blocks, showcasing the diversity and complexity of the combined property. Our 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon came from 24 unique vineyard blocks, planted at elevations from 850 to 1600 ft asl.
WINEMAKING Priest Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 22 months in 40% new French oak and 60% once used French oak barrels. The lees was stirred for the first year followed by three racking in the second year of aging. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
HARVEST NOTES The 2014 vintage was a classic, the third straight year of a near perfect growing conditions. The long growing season had warm temperatures, mild heat spikes, and consistent weather throughout harvest. The wines are classic in style, structure, and balance. The harvest for Cabernet Sauvignon began on September 24th and ended on October 15th, slightly later than the valley floor.
TASTING NOTES “The aromas of this 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon are full of black cherries, star anise, and a touch of earth. This full-bodied wine has good concentration, supple tannins , and balanced acidity. The rounded mouth feel is persistent on the long and lingering finish.”
~Craig Becker, Winemaker
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. Generous flavors of blackcurrants, plum, Asian spice, licorice and earth jump from the glass as well as the flavors of this full-bodied, supple-textured, low-acid and fleshy wine. It is delicious now and should continue to be so for 15 or more years.
