Schrader Description
For more than a decade Schrader Cellars has produced benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from the most prestigious vineyards in the Napa Valley — notably the first-growth Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. With winemaker Thomas Brown we have created wines known for their vibrant flavor and opulent richness. Our program focuses on highlighting the character and profile of three distinct clonal varieties with minimal intervention that allows the true nature of each to shine.
Ultimately, the wines speak for themselves. Schrader Cellars has garnered the highest critical acclaim in the history of American Cabernet Sauvignon production, where our 'no-holds barred' wines represent excellence at the highest level from vineyard practices through the careful bottling and delivery of each and every wine.
Our current portfolio is another extraordinary addition to the history books. Bottled in June, each of the 2014 Schrader wines has developed an exquisite profile that pays homage to the unique character of our three distinct Cabernet Sauvignon clones and vineyards. While the 2014 Vintages production is slightly down in quantity from the past few years, the quality of the vintage is excellent with it’s distinct profile falling somewhere in between the 2012 and 2013 vintages.
Profile
Opaque and concentrated, our 2015 Schrader GIII Cabernet provides a compelling mélange of ultra-ripe red and black fruit aromas accented with notes of sweet anise, savory spice, and crushed rock earthiness that repeat on the palate. The wine is ample and approachable with lavish texture and well-toned tannins that seamlessly carry through the expansive, full finish.
Vintage
The 2015 vintage was radiant with abundant sunshine and consistent weather that yielded an excellent, albeit small, crop of optimally ripe grapes from all of our vineyard sources. Now resting in barrel, the young wines are showing their brilliance with boundless fruit character that harkens back to the acclaimed 2012 vintage. While it is the fruit profile that reflects these wines, it is the underlying firm structure of the 2015 Cabernets that distinguishes them from their siblings. As Thomas remarked, “fruit sweetness will allow these wines to drink really well while young, yet it’s their looming structure that will allow for long aging.”
Wine Advocate: 97 Points
Coming from the Beckstoffer Georges III vineyard, the very deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon GIII bursts forth with an outrageously spicy nose of Chinese five spice and aniseed with a core of crème de cassis, blueberry pie, menthol and chocolate box plus a waft of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, rich, ripe and decadent on the palate, it fills the mouth with exotic spice layers and warm black fruits, framed by velvety tannins and great freshness, finishing with epic persistence. 318 cases produced.
